First World War Centenary Battlefield Tour
Friday 10th - Monday 13th October
Two members of staff and two pupils had the unique opportunity to follow in the footsteps of World War 1 soldiers when they travelled up and down the Western front through France and Belgium. Mrs Black and Mr Kemsley accompanied Ben and Zachary, two of our Key Stage 4 pupils on a four day tour with 40 other West Country schools. The trip was part of a fully funded government initiative in which every secondary school in England over the next 5 years will be offered the opportunity to visit the battle fields. During trip the group visited memorial museums and cemeteries but the visit to Thiepval Wood to see the remains of World War trenches that left a lasting impression. Mrs Black reports, it was a damp autumn afternoon and we had a 45 minutes guided tour of the trenches. We got to see firsthand the conditions that the soldiers fought and live in. The wood was littered with their personal affects and as the light faded there was an eerie silence.
