Gardening at Brook Green
Over the next months, students at Brook Green will have the opportunity to get closer to nature by tending the vegetable and flower plots, engage in planting, weeding, watering and looking after seeds.
BK, JA and A Wenmoth of St Dominic, Cornwall have kindly donated plants, seeds and compost to the school in order to help us to move forward with this project. Many students have already helped to clear away weeds and plant a variety of plants from fennel, lavender, chamomile, violets and poppies. Students have also planted seeds such as: carrots, mixed leaves, sunflowers, onion bulbs, corn and wildflowers (in a separate bed). Each Friday afternoon activity for KS3 will now also include gardening (depending on the weather).
As a side project, 9SB are taking part in ‘The Doomsday Plot’ where they have weeded some raised beds, raked the earth and planted seeds with a sell-by date of 2004 and 2006. They are keeping a close eye on the coriander, rocket and lettuce that they planted just before the Easter holiday. They are watering the raised beds every few days and are also taking part in the larger gardening project at Brook Green. They are doing this as part of their ASDAN qualification where they are improving the environment.
We will keep you all updated on the progress of each project in future posts!
